Joseph Dixon

The Wall Murals of Memorial Hermann Prevention and Recovery Center

Joseph Dixon first began working with PaRC through a collaborative partnership with Young Audiences of Houston, providing art programming for clients on the adolescent unit. Shortly afterward, he began part-time as a PCA on the unit in 2015. While working with the adolescents, he has offered music and art activities in an attempt to build self-confidence, creative self-expression and serve as an alternative to negative activity.

He has also found joy in painting murals around the facility that depict the historic images of the founders of Alcoholics Anonymous Bill Wilson and Dr. Bob. There are images on the adolescent unit of colorful tranquil scenery, along with ceiling tiles painted by the young patients to express their experience at PaRC. Most recently, Dixon just completed a large wall mural on the Detox Unit that he hopes evokes the feelings calm and serenity.

“I find my work at PaRC to be the most enjoyable when I can engage the patients in the creative process. That can be the inclusion and engagement of painting the murals or creating something to leave behind as a word or image of inspiration. PaRC provides me with the opportunity to offer one of the greatest gifts you can share – SERVICE”
